In a strategic move to provide Nigerians with an affordable and sustainable alternative to petrol and diesel, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has launched the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi). Under this initiative, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will be made available for vehicles at a price of N230 per litre. This groundbreaking move comes in the wake of the recent removal of fuel subsidies, which has led to a significant increase in petrol prices, currently selling for over N900 per litre. President Tinubu’s decision to introduce CNG at a much lower price reflects his commitment to reducing the cost of living and alleviating the financial burden on Nigerians, particularly those who rely on transportation for their livelihoods.
One Million Free CNG Conversion Kits for Commercial Vehicles
As part of the PCNGi, President Tinubu has ordered the distribution of one million free CNG conversion kits for commercial vehicles across the country over the next 18 months. These kits, which include free installation, will enable commercial transporters to easily switch their vehicles to run on CNG, allowing them to take advantage of the significantly lower fuel prices. The distribution of these kits will be carried out in collaboration with key partners, ensuring nationwide accessibility. In the first phase of the initiative, PCNGi will begin the immediate distribution of 10,000 free conversion kits this week. These kits will be provided at no cost to transport operators through key national transport associations, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Moove, UBER, and the Kaduna State Transport Authority (KSTA).
Authorized Conversion Centers Across Nigeria
The conversion process will be managed in partnership with NIPCO Gas, which has set up a network of authorized conversion centers across Nigeria. These centers will provide the necessary infrastructure and services to ensure a smooth transition for vehicles switching to CNG. By 2025, the Nigerian government aims to distribute one million conversion kits, ensuring the country’s commercial transport sector is well-positioned to embrace CNG and reduce its reliance on costly petrol and diesel.
Cleaner, Cheaper, and Sustainable Energy Alternative
The introduction of CNG as a fuel source not only offers a cheaper alternative but also a cleaner and more sustainable option, aligning with the government’s energy diversification agenda. By switching to CNG, Nigeria is embracing a fuel alternative that benefits both the economy and the environment.”This initiative promises immediate economic relief for Nigerians, while also advancing cleaner energy practices,” said Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director of PCNGi. He added, “For more information on conversion centers and to access the list of active centers, Nigerians are encouraged to visit the official PCNGi websites.”
