In a significant move to empower the youth and enhance their employability, the Benue State Government has announced a partnership with Google to train 10,000 youths in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This initiative was unveiled by Governor Hyacinth Alia during a state broadcast commemorating the International Youth Day on August 14, 2024.Governor Alia emphasized the critical need for digital skills in today’s economy, stating, “This initiative is designed to equip you with the skills needed to compete in the digital economy, opening doors to endless opportunities.” The training aims to provide participants with essential ICT skills that will enable them to thrive in various sectors, thereby reducing unemployment and steering them away from criminal activities.
Addressing Youth Challenges
During his address, Governor Alia acknowledged the pressing issues of crime and social vices among the youth, urging them to abandon paths of drug abuse, cultism, and internet fraud. He stated, “I urge the youths who are involved in all kinds of criminality in the State to lay down their arms, embrace peace, and choose the right paths.” This call to action is part of a broader strategy to foster a peaceful and productive environment for the youth of Benue State.
Additional Youth Development Initiatives
Beyond the ICT training, Governor Alia outlined several other initiatives aimed at supporting youth development. He announced that some youths would soon participate in the UN Volunteer Scheme, a collaboration with the United Nations to provide further opportunities for engagement and skill development. Additionally, the government is in the process of constructing a fashion hub designed to nurture creativity and entrepreneurship among the youth.Alia expressed his commitment to youth empowerment, stating, “We understand that the development of our youth is a panacea for the development of Benue State.” He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, healthcare, and education as foundational pillars for long-term growth.
The Broader Context
This initiative aligns with national efforts to enhance digital skills among youths in Nigeria. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also launched the Digital Job Creation for Youths (DJCY) program, which aims to equip young people across the country with digital skills necessary for self-employment and increased employability.
